A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL

by Alan Ayckbourn

14th - 18th May

OVERVIEW

Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society is staging a production of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera. Well it makes a change from The Student Prince which they do every 5 years. The director is a loud, energetic Welshman with all the subtle social skills of a breeze block. The love interest is played by his bored wife. A wide range of very recognisable characters, including stroppy daughter, bolshy barmaid, unsuitable boyfriend, a hopeless local councilor and his wife and ambitious businessman. They spend night after night waiting for the director to reach their scenes in the show. And into this mix wanders Guy: a lonely, newly-widowed man, who is unable to say No to anything, whether it be a request for confidential business information or an offer of illicit sex, and through a series of accidents, bribery and actor tantrums he advances from a one-line part to playing the lead.  Enjoy an evening of singing, dancing, arguing, fighting, loving and laughter all the way, through this exceptionally funny and sometimes painful observation of life in community theatre.

Alan Ayckbourn’s A Chorus Of Disapproval won the Olivier award for best play in 1984 and is an hilarious look at the world of amateur theatre societies. A painfully funny tale that is guaranteed to leave you laughing long after the curtain has come down.
